For years, personalisation in digital products has meant showing different content to different users. The interface itself — the buttons, the layout, the navigation — stayed the same. Everybody got the same shell; only the data changed.
Generative UI breaks that assumption entirely. Instead of serving a fixed interface that holds dynamic content, the interface itself becomes the output. The layout, the components, the interactions — all of it generated fresh, shaped by who you are, what you're doing, and what the AI understands about your intent.
This isn't science fiction. It's already happening, and it's moving faster than most teams have had time to process.
What is Generative UI?
Generative UI refers to interfaces that are dynamically constructed by an AI model rather than authored by a designer or developer ahead of time. Instead of selecting from a predefined set of layouts, the system produces UI components — forms, cards, navigation elements, data visualisations — in response to a specific context, query, or user behaviour.
The key distinction is that the UI is not retrieved; it is generated. A traditional CMS-driven website retrieves the right template and populates it with content. A generative UI system looks at the user's situation and decides what interface would serve them best right now — and then builds it.
The interface stops being a container for content and becomes content itself.
This might mean a dashboard that reorganises itself when it detects you're under time pressure. A form that removes irrelevant fields when it understands your context. A navigation that surfaces the tools you'll need for this session, not the tools you used last week.
How It Works Today
The technical foundation for generative UI has emerged quickly from a confluence of three developments: powerful multimodal language models, component-level rendering architectures, and streaming infrastructure that can deliver UI incrementally.
Vercel's AI SDK and the RSC pattern
Vercel's AI SDK introduced a pattern that's become foundational: using React Server Components alongside language models to stream UI components rather than text. Instead of asking Claude or GPT-4 to return a string, you ask it to return structured data that maps directly to a component tree. The server renders those components and streams them to the client — often before the model has even finished generating the full response.
The result is a chat-like interface where the response isn't a paragraph of text but a rendered UI element — a table, a booking widget, a product card — that the user can immediately interact with. Vercel calls this pattern "AI-generated UI", and it's baked into their v0 product, which lets you describe an interface in plain language and receive working React components.
Anthropic's computer use
Anthropic's computer use capability takes this a step further. Rather than generating components, it allows Claude to observe a screen and interact with existing interfaces directly. This is less about building UI and more about navigating it — but the implications for how we think about "the interface" are profound. If an AI can use any interface, the question of which interface exists becomes secondary to what the AI can accomplish within it.
Tool-calling and structured outputs
Underneath both of these approaches is the same mechanism: language models with function-calling or structured output capabilities. Define a schema for a component — name, props, children — and a well-instructed model will return valid JSON that maps to it. The rendering layer handles the rest. This is now reliable enough in production to build on, especially with models like GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 1.5 Pro.
Real-World Examples
Generative UI isn't purely theoretical. Several product categories are already deploying it in meaningful ways.
- Personalised analytics dashboards that surface the metrics most relevant to a user's role, rather than displaying every available chart
- Adaptive onboarding flows that skip steps the user clearly doesn't need, based on their responses or detected behaviour
- Context-aware e-commerce interfaces that restructure product listings based on what the session data suggests the user is actually trying to accomplish
- Customer support tools where the interface presented to an agent changes dynamically based on what the AI infers about the customer's issue
- Internal business tools where power users get dense data tables while occasional users see simplified summaries of the same data
Linear, the project management tool, has experimented with AI-surfaced actions — the interface presenting the most relevant commands based on what you're working on. Notion AI reshapes the toolbar based on the type of content you're editing. These are early expressions of the same underlying idea.
Generative UI doesn't require scrapping your component library. In most implementations, the AI selects and arranges from a set of pre-built components — the generation is in the orchestration, not the components themselves.
The Design Implications
For designers, generative UI introduces a tension that's genuinely uncomfortable: the consistency vs. personalisation trade-off becomes much sharper.
Traditional design systems are built on the assumption that consistency builds trust. Users learn where things are. The mental model of the product stabilises over time. Generative UI threatens that stability — if the interface changes based on context, the user's mental model has to be more flexible, more abstract.
This pushes designers toward a higher level of abstraction. Rather than designing specific layouts, you design rules: what information hierarchies make sense for this product? What signals should increase or decrease prominence? What interaction patterns should remain consistent regardless of context, because they form the product's fundamental vocabulary?
The designer's role shifts from authoring interfaces to designing the system that generates them. This requires a different kind of thinking — closer to systems design than visual design, closer to information architecture than pixel work.
Brand consistency under pressure
Brand expression becomes harder to guarantee when the UI is generated. A fixed layout communicates brand through deliberate whitespace, typographic hierarchy, the rhythm of components. A generated layout might technically use the right fonts and colours while still feeling wrong — because the proportions, the pacing, the sense of intentionality that defines a brand comes from human craft applied to specific decisions.
The answer here is probably constraint. Generative UI systems work best when they operate within a well-defined design language — where the AI selects from approved components, follows established spacing systems, and is prevented from generating arbitrary layouts. The creativity is in the orchestration; the guardrails are in the design system.
Challenges and Limits
The practical challenges of generative UI are significant enough that most teams aren't ready to ship it at scale.
Unpredictability is the central problem. Language models are probabilistic — the same context won't always produce the same output. For a UI that needs to be reliable, debuggable, and consistent enough that support teams can help users navigate it, this is a serious constraint. Reproducibility is still something you have to engineer around, not a property the models provide out of the box.
Accessibility is another front that's currently underserved. Generated interfaces need to meet WCAG standards, which means every component the AI might assemble has to be accessible in isolation and in combination. This is achievable if your component library is built accessibly — but it requires deliberate engineering that most teams haven't prioritised yet.
Performance is a third concern. Generating UI requires a round trip to a language model, which adds latency. Streaming helps mask this, but a user who expects instant feedback will notice the lag in complex generation tasks. Caching strategies and pre-generation can mitigate this, but they add engineering complexity.
Finally, there is the question of user trust. Interfaces that change in unexpected ways can feel unreliable or even deceptive. The shift has to be handled carefully — ideally, users should understand that the interface adapts to them, and that adaptation should feel helpful rather than arbitrary.
Where It's Heading
The direction of travel is clear, even if the timeline is uncertain. As models become faster and cheaper, the cost of generating UI in real time drops. As design systems become more component-driven and more codified, the constraints that make generation reliable become easier to implement. As users become more accustomed to AI-native products, their tolerance for adaptive interfaces will likely increase.
The near-term reality is probably a hybrid: most of the interface is static and designed, while specific sections — dashboards, recommendation surfaces, contextual toolbars — are generated. This lets teams experiment with the pattern without betting the entire product on it.
The longer-term possibility is more radical: products that don't have a fixed interface at all, where every session is a fresh negotiation between the user's intent and the system's understanding of what would best serve it. That's a genuinely different kind of product design, and it will require a genuinely different kind of designer.
What's certain is that the teams building fluency with this pattern now — who understand the engineering, the design constraints, and the user experience principles — will have a significant advantage when generative UI moves from experiment to expectation.
