For a long time, content strategy had one primary audience: the human reading the page. You wrote for people, structured things so they could scan and find answers, and made Google happy as a side effect of doing those things well. The relationship was straightforward.
That's no longer the full picture. A growing proportion of queries now get answered by AI systems — Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Claude — before the human ever lands on your page. Your content now has two readers, and they have subtly different needs. The good news is that writing well for one tends to serve the other. The bad news is that most content strategies haven't consciously adapted to this.
How AI Systems Actually Read Your Content
Understanding what AI summarisers are looking for requires understanding what they're trying to do: they're attempting to construct a trustworthy, concise answer to a specific question, drawn from the most reliable sources they can find. That framing tells you almost everything about what makes content AI-friendly.
AI systems favour content that is:
- Declarative and direct. Sentences that make clear statements are easier to extract and cite than sentences that hedge, qualify excessively, or bury the claim in subordinate clauses.
- Well-structured with semantic headings. A heading like "How to reduce customer churn" is far more useful to an AI reader than "Let's dig into the retention problem." The heading is a signal about what the section answers.
- Specific rather than general. AI systems looking for facts, figures, and named examples will pass over vague paragraphs in favour of content that gives them something concrete to work with.
- Authoritative in voice. This is harder to define, but AI systems trained on human-rated quality signals have learned to recognise confident, knowledgeable prose. Hedging language and generic statements are signals of lower value.
What Has Actually Changed in Practice
Three things have shifted in how professional content writers approach their work, and they're worth naming explicitly.
The answer-first structure is now mandatory
There was always a good argument for leading with your conclusion rather than building to it. That argument is now decisive. AI systems extracting a summary of your article will typically pull from the first substantive paragraph after each heading. If that paragraph is contextual throat-clearing rather than the actual answer, you lose the citation.
The practical change: every section of your article should open with its main claim stated plainly, then supported. Not the other way around.
FAQ sections have become genuinely valuable
FAQ sections used to feel like a lazy SEO tactic — stuffing keyword variants into a block of questions nobody actually asked. That reputation was fair. But the same format, applied to real questions that real people have about your topic, is now one of the most reliably cited content types by AI search systems. Questions and direct answers are exactly what an AI summariser wants to find.
The distinction matters: a FAQ built around questions people actually have, answered with genuine specificity, is good content. A FAQ built around keyword permutations, with vague answers, is still spam — AI systems have gotten better at telling the difference.
First-hand experience has become a moat
This is the most important change, and it cuts against the grain of the "AI can write all your content" narrative. AI summarisers are trained to prefer content from sources that demonstrate genuine expertise and experience. Google's helpful content guidelines explicitly reward "first-hand experience" — content that could only have been written by someone who has actually done the thing.
The content that AI systems most want to cite is the content that AI systems cannot themselves generate: specific, first-hand accounts of doing real work in the real world.
This is why case studies, project retrospectives, and specific client examples have more value now than they ever did under the old SEO model. A paragraph that says "we ran this campaign for a property client and saw a 34% lift in qualified leads over six weeks" is substantially more valuable — to both human readers and AI summarisers — than a paragraph that says "AI can improve marketing efficiency." The former is citable and credible. The latter is noise.
Structuring Content for Both Audiences
The practical content structure that serves both human readers and AI readers well looks like this:
- Clear, specific title — states exactly what the article covers, ideally in the form of a claim or question
- Direct opening paragraph — establishes the core argument within the first two sentences
- Semantic H2 headings — phrase these as the answers to questions, not as clever labels
- Answer-first section structure — state the point, then explain or support it
- Specific examples and data — numbers, named tools, real outcomes wherever possible
- A clear conclusion — AI systems often extract from conclusions as well as introductions
This is not a radical departure from good writing practice — it's essentially the inverted pyramid that journalists have used for a century. What's changed is how consequential it is. Before, burying your best point in paragraph four cost you some reader engagement. Now it may cost you the citation entirely.
What Not to Change
There's a version of "writing for AI" that means draining all personality and voice from your content in favour of a flat, declarative style. That's a mistake, and it misunderstands what AI systems are actually rewarding.
Voice, specificity, and genuine perspective are features, not bugs, from an AI-summariser's point of view. Generic content — the kind that sounds like it could have been written about any brand in any context — is exactly what AI systems are trained to filter out. The more specific and distinctive your content, the more valuable it is as a source.
The test: Read your opening paragraph and ask whether it could have been written by any competitor in your space, or only by you. If the answer is "anyone", rewrite it with a specific point of view, a specific example, or a specific claim only you can make.
The writers who will struggle over the next few years are those who were already producing generic content and hoped volume would compensate. AI search surfaces the best answer to a question; it doesn't surface the most common one. Differentiation through genuine expertise and specific perspective has always been the right strategy. Now it's also measurably the effective one.
Measuring AI Visibility
Traditional SEO metrics — rankings, organic traffic — don't directly capture whether your content is being cited in AI summaries. This is a real gap in most analytics setups. A few proxies that help:
- Monitor branded searches in Google Search Console — if AI summaries are sending qualified traffic your way, you'll often see an increase in branded queries from people who encountered your name in a summary
- Periodically search for your target topics in Perplexity and ChatGPT to check whether your content is among the cited sources
- Track "direct" traffic in GA4 — some AI-referred visits arrive without a referrer tag and will show as direct
None of these is a complete picture, but together they give you a reasonable read on whether your content is visible in AI-mediated search. The tools for measuring this properly are still being built — which means the teams who figure out their own proxy metrics now will have a significant analytical advantage in twelve months.
